Work in Progress Café

- BY SARAH KELLAPATHA

And so I trotted off to the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, anticipating a fabulous culinary experience at the Work In Progress (W.I.P.) Café. Sitting down at the restaurant, I look around and absorb in the beautiful surroundings. Wrought iron chairs, wooden tables and of course how could I forget the clay salt and pepper shakers? W.I.P. is quite the ideal place to head to if you prefer to have a relaxed and rather lazy lunch date or even romantic dinners come dusk.

I must note that they serve a killer iced tea cleverly titled as the W.I.P. Special. An interesting blend of several different flavours, this concoction is so good it is guaranteed to make your eyes pop. In a good way, of course so take our word for it and try the W.I.P. Special. Hints of strawberry, peach and lemon take over your taste buds. You will not be disappointed. “This iced tea was prepared by accident and it tasted so good, we decided to put it on the menu,” says Dain who is the Manager at W.I.P.

Moving onto lunch, I was served the chicken schnitzel with potato salad and berry compote and a second dish, which was the chicken bockwurst with sauerkraut. The chicken schnitzel won over my heart. The potato salad (perfect comfort food) and berry compote made for a delicious combination and the two went very well with the chicken schnitzel. Moving on to the chicken bockwurst, it was made to perfection and was complimented by the mashed potatoes. Portions are fairly large and can be shared if you prefer to indulge in a relatively light meal.

Speaking to Chef Haymantha De Silva, I find out that the most popular and fast selling dishes on the menu are the barbequed spare ribs, schnitzel and bockwurst. “We have nearly 50-60 spare rib dishes sold per day.” said Chef Haymantha thus proving that it is indeed a favourite at the café. Dessert involves different ice cream sundaes using Il Gelato ice cream and other items on the menu.

So what are you waiting for? Didn’t the description of the iced tea tempt you already?
