Mystery surrounds little girl’s fall into a garden well

The body of a seven- year- old girl was recovered on Monday after noon (30) from a garden well at Gramodaya Mawatha in Panadura. The victim, Amisha Nethmini Ranasinghe was a Grade Two student of the Mahabellan­a Primary School. On Monday morning the little girl who retur ned home with her mother after visiting her grandmothe­r at Wadduwa had gone to bring one of the house keys left at a neighbouri­ng house. Meanwhile her mother who had a duplicate key opened the door and entered the house. However when the girl was late she went in search of her to the neighbouri­ng house to find that the girl had not come there. When neighbours searched for the girl in the surroundin­g area they found that she had fallen into a well.

She was rushed to Panadura Base Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Relatives said it was surprising how she fell into the well surrounded by a protective a wall that was about a foot above the girl’s head

. They also said she had not reason to go to the well where there was no bucket to draw water. A senior police official said the cause of the death could be decided only after the postmortem examinatio­n which was to be held yesterday at the Panadura Base Hospital. Panadura police are conducting inquiries.
