ARE WE REALLY JUST MONTHS AWAY FROM OUR DOOMSDAY?

By now all of us have heard something about this New Year; 2012.We have read many newspaper articles on a little something called the doomsday. So, is the world really coming to an end on 21st of December 2012 and all of us would be wiped away from this planet forever?

Many say that the world will come to an end with the collision of an asteroid or with the collision of a black hole. But the most prominent factor which triggered all this excitement is the Mayan calendar. The Mayans were said to be a very developed civilization that had a thorough knowledge about Astronomy and Science. According to this calendar we are living in the fourth world and it will reach to an end on this December 21st.however many critics are opposed to this idea and suggest that this is a misinterpretation

of the Mayan Calendar. Another theory about this is that is the geomagnetical reversal or more commonly known as the pole shift. This is said to be caused by a solar flare which would release a huge amount of energy. It would cause a reversal of north and south magnetic poles. But Scientists suggest that this does not start on a specific date and could take about 7000 years to complete.

Another theory is that a planetary conjunction will occur on this date. However multi-planet alignments have occurred in both 2000 and 2010 and obviously nothing claustrophobic has happened in the past years. Some believe that the natural disasters which happened during the past years leads to the end of time in 2012. Many don’t believe in this doomsday but Contrary to popular opinion some people still believe this. Some people are building asteroid proof bunkers and are planning mass suicide with their loved ones and pets! Some say this doomsday is entirely a fabrication by the media in an attempt to earn profits.

So folks is it really wise to put off all our day-today activities and wait for this so called “Doomsday” or should we get on with our lives as usual? In my opinion we should enjoy our life while it lasts instead of waiting until this “Doomsday”!!! Sent by ANUPAMA SAMARANAYAKE
