Chennai: Maintaining that she was working towards protecting the livelihood of fishermen, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday said she would not "stop" till Katchchatheevu, an islet in the Palk straits now under the control of Sri Lanka was retrieved.

"The attacks on our fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy can be stopped only by retrieving Kachchatheevu," she said in the state assembly. Replying to CPI member Arumugam, Jayalalithaa said her case on getting back Kachchatheevu from Sri Lanka was presently in front of the Supreme Court. The Tamil Nadu government too had passed a resolution on this effect.

“I am working towards protecting the livelihood of the fishermen and I will not stop until Kachchatheevu is retrieved," she asserted.

Kachchatheevu was ceded by India to Sri Lanka under an agreement in 1974. (PTI)
