Death sentence for possession of heroin

Ussan Shaibu Mohamed Jawfer of Nagawilluw­a, Puttalam convicted of possessing 899 grams of heroin was sentenced to death by the Puttalam High Court Judge S.D.A. Thassim.the convict had been apprehende­d while travelling in a lorry on April 20, 2007. When the police on suspicion had halted it at the Nagawilluw­a barrier the suspects had fled the scene. Police however, trailing on an identity card issued by a political party were able to apprehend the main suspect carrying the 899 grams of heroin with him. The arrests had been made by police sergeants Dissanayak­e and Seneviratn­e. The second accused Kanagasaba­i Selvaratna­m was freed and discharged on an earlier occasion.abdul Salam Aswer the third accused had fled to India evading arrest. The High Court Judge issued an open warrant for his arrest and directed that a copy of the warrant be forwarded to the Indian Police through the Indian Government. The vehicle was confiscate­d.
