GURUKULAMV­INSTUNNING WIN OVER MARIS STELLA

Gurukula MV Kelaniya making their first appearance in the top division of the Under 19 interschoo­l tournament is giving the fancied teams a torrid time.

A few weeks back they got the better of S. Thomas’ Mt Lavinia and yesterday they recorded a stunning innings and 33 runs win over Maris Stella in the match concluded at the Mahara Prison grounds.

Though there were no significan­t individual performanc­es their all-round team effort has paid dividends. After bundling out Maris Stella for just 68 in the first innings, the Kelaniya boys put in another fine performanc­e when they restricted their opponents batting the second time to 118 on day two.

The second day saw Gurukula MV resuming from their overnight score of 201 for 8 making 219 which gave them a lead of 151 runs as Maris Stella put in another pathetic batting display.

St Sylvester’s registered a first inning win over Royal Panadura in the Under 19 cricket match concluded at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium yesterday. The highlight of the match was a ton made by Sumeda Dissanayak­e of St Sylvester’s and an all round performanc­e by Royal Panadura’s Kavindu Ashan.

St Peter’s opener Shehan Fernando cracked a 119 and put on a second wicket stand of 175 runs with Janith Liyanage helping the side end day one making 220 for 8 against Royal in their Under 19 encounter played at Reid Avenue.

Earlier in the day Royal taking first lease of the wicket helped by half tons from Imal Liyanage, Ashen Ramanayake and Chamika Karunaratn­e made 262. The match will be continued today.
