Residents of the area turned violent after hearing about the incident and staged protests demanding the immediate transfer of the doctor involved in the incident. they said had been running private medical centres elsewhere.

They condemned the actions of the doctor citing it as a dastardly act. A senior official of the Sevanagala Hospital said that the doctor who was wanted in connection with the incident was absconding.

It was revealed by the minor employee that the suspect rival doctor had promised to make this minor employee an ambulance driver once he became the medical officer in charge of the hospital. The minor employee has confessed that he had put the poison given by this doctor into Dr. Vitharana’s drinking water tank.

Commenting on the incident, Dr. Vitarana said that he, his wife and two kids had started falling sick very often in recent times, and he was in a dilemma after not being able to ascertain the reason for that. “During this time, I had suspicion about the behaviour of this minor employee assigned to clean up my storage tank. I notices a complete change in his behavioral pattern. I realized that he was watchful of my movements. He was always looking at the storage tank. On February 3, I saw him sniffing at a sample of water taken from the tank,” Dr. Vitarana said.
