tinuing on a positive note but insisted that Mr. Fonseka would not apologise.

Ms. Fonseka told journalists yesterday that her husband had decided not to ask for a pardon as he believed he had done nothing wrong. She and her supporters said Democratic National Alliance (DNA) MP Tiran Alles was having talks with the government to get her husband released.

DNA MP Arjuna Ranatunga said the party was keeping the international community updated on these talks while DNA MP Jayantha Ketagoda said they would not dilute the struggle for the release of political prisoners including Mr. Fonseka and their efforts to safeguard democracy. New Left Front (NLF) Leader Wickramabahu Karunaratne said the government could not be trusted though the talks were continuing.

However the Movement for Democracy which is engaged in the struggle to get the former army commander released would hold a street protest at Aluthkade on February 8 which marks two years of his imprisonment. Mr. Fonseka is expected to be brought to courts on that day for the hearing of the appeal he had filed against the verdict given on the white flag case. DNA MP Vijitha Herath said any political party was welcome to join this protest which would be launched against the suppression of former General’s fundamental rights.
