PRESIDENT CANNOT ACT INDEPENDENTLY SAYS PM

- BY AJITHLAL SHANTHA UDAYA AND P.A.K. WIJAYASUNDERA

“The President has no right to take individual decisions, that right is vested in Parliament. The constitution has been formulated by the Parliament and it has the sole right of amending it. Regulations for governing the country are all vested in Parliament” said Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne participating at the Prophet Mohamed’s Birthday celebrations on February 5 at the Arabic College, Ratnapura.

About five thousand Muslim representatives from all parts of the country were present at this event.

The festival grounds and Ratnapura town were brightly decorated with green and white flags.

The Premier also planted a mango tree in the precincts of the Arabic College in Batugedara, Ratnapura.

The Premier emphasised in detail the necessity to enter into a dialogue with regard to the 13th Amendment and suggested that all accept a common solution. This was also the wish of the President, he added.

The west is keen in destroying most of the countries in the middle-east in their thirst for oil resources, but they point an accusing finger at our Presi- dent who crushed a terrorist outfit that was bent on killing thousands of innocent Buddhists, Muslims, Politicians and ordinary citizens. The international organisations are now campaigning against our President, painting a different picture.
