OIC CAUGHT IN TIMBER CASE

The IP Bertie Udukumbura the OIC of Bibile Medagama Police Station had been interdicte­d with immediate effect, police said.

This was the outcome of an investigat­ion made by ASP Wasantha Kandewatta of Moneragala into an incident where the OIC and a group of police officers of Medagama police station were allegedly involved in an illicit timber racket.

Earlier three police officers of Medagama were also interdicte­d on the orders of the DIG of Uva Province.

other police officers of Medagama in civvies had been transporti­ng logs by lorry and were apprehende­d by the range forest officers at Bibile.

At the time of the arrest the Police team had failed in their attempt to convince the forest officers that the stock of wood had been taken into custody by themselves. Thereafter on the instructio­ns of the Moneragala SSP S. P. A. L. C. Gunawarden­e, the Moneragala ASP Wasan- tha Kandewatta had conducted an investigat­ion and interdicte­d the OIC.

It is alleged that the suspected police officers are involved in this timber racket.
