PRO-LTTETAMILSSTILLEXTORTING MONEY, DEVANANDATOLD

- BY KELUM BANDARA IN GENEVA

A group of Tamils living in Europe have brought to the notice of Traditional Industries Minister Douglas Devananda here in Geneva that some activists of the PRO-LTTE Tamil Diaspora continued to extort money from various people through different means, sources said yesterday.

A group of anti-ltte Tamils living in France and Switzerland had met with Mr. Devananda who was in Geneva to participate in bilateral talks with the representatives of various countries.

A member of the group told Daily Mirror after talks with the Minister that his team had even prepared a document outlining the atrocities of LTTE activists in Europe. He said that LTTE supporters had even prepared bogus pay slips for their members to apply for loans from banks in Europe. “Once a person gets a loan by presenting bogus pay slips, he or she will get only a portion of it. The rest will be taken by the LTTE rump here. They will not even repay the loan installments,” he said.

against the resolution to be moved by the United States against Sri Lanka during the 19th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The sessions are due to start today and go on till March 23.

Meanwhile, members of the proLTTE Diaspora had planned to stage a demonstration against Sri Lanka in front of the UNHRC office today. According to sources here, one LTTE faction led by Vishvanathan Rudrakumar was expected to arrive from London while yet another faction led by Nediyavan, who arrives from Belgium, would also join the protest along with their supporters.

Sri Lanka’s mission here had asked for extra security from the Swiss authorities due to the volatile situation that could get out of control as a result of these protests.
