DHARMARAJAIN SEVENS HEAVEN

- BY M. SHAMIL AMIT

Dharmaraja turned tables to get past fancied teams to emerge champions at the U20 Singer inter-schools rugby 7’s tournament when they defeated home town rivals Kingswood by a close 19-17 win in the final played at the Royal Sports Complex ground at Reid Avenue yesterday.

The Rajans was the toast of the crowd in the tournament and overcame top teams that were in fray in the likes of St Peter’s whom they beat in the semi final.

The finale was a well fought out contest with Dharmarajah doing the scoring first in the third minutes with a try by Thilina Wijesinghe but two minutes later Kingswood equalized through Ruvin Ariyaratne.

Dharmaraja took back the lead with Thilina going over for his second try which he himself converted.

Kingswood came back as Ruvin who too went over for his second try with Aruna Perera adding the extra points which saw the two teams changing ends on 12 a piece.

The resumption saw Dharmaraja surprising their opponents in the very first minute with an under the posts try by Buvenaka Udangamuwa and Thilina making no mistake with the conversion.

The next scoring came eight minutes later for Kingswood who had earlier thrown away many scoring opportunities.

They succeeded through a try scored by D.M. Wijesinghe. However the fluffed conversion assured Dharmaraja of a win and thereby secure a historic U20 inter-schools sevens title.

Science College Mt Lavinia, Royal Colombo and Ananda emerged the Plate, Bowl and Shield champions respectively.
