CIMA holds discussion on responding to ethical threats in Lankan businesses
The CIMA Sri Lanka division held a focus group discussion on ‘responding to ethical threats in Sri Lankan businesses’ recently, at the CIMA Sri Lanka division.
The discussion focused on ethical threats and issues faced in diverse industries in Sri Lanka such as garments, banking, financial services and tourism. Possible safeguards and methods of support that can be provided by professional institutes and business ethics related stakeholders were discussed and documented.
According to a survey done by CIMA in partnership with the Institute of Business Ethics, 84% of finance professionals believe businesses have a moral imperative to help address global ethics issues. It mentions at the same time that the majority of the respondents feel companies are ‘tackling ethical issues on a superficial level but are failing to strategically manage their ethical performance’. In response to these issues, CIMA is conducting a survey on sustainability and ethics in the workplace. The research in 2012 will deal with experiences, issues and safeguards relevance to businesses across the globe. The focused group discussion conducted in Sri Lanka will compliment this global survey with the empirical data it has gathered.
