The third reprint of the book ‘In the Line of Duty’ encompassing the captivating reports of Sri Lankan surgeon Dr. Gamini Goonetilleke’s 25-year career, was launched recently.

The book written in simple language without much medical terminology makes it more reader-friendly for the ordinary masses who are taken on a journey to many parts of the country where the surgeon has served.

“I have gone much beyond relating the experiences of a surgeon. This is by providing a deep insight into Sri Lankan society where I describe the different aspects not only of surgery but also the problems faced by society in different parts of Sri Lanka.

The problems faced by medical professionals working in rural areas and how these problems can be overcome is described in detail based on my experiences while working as surgeon at Base Hospital Polonnaruwa for a period of over 6 years. I have also described some aspects of the North-east conflict.

The epic and gripping story of surgery amidst exploding bombs, gunfire and mines in the 30 year conflict in the North-east have been highlighted. Great attention has been paid to an area of my interest – treating mine injuries and control of trauma,” said Dr. Goonetilleke adding that this was written to mainly inspire those interested in taking up Medicine as a career.
