Inquiry into expulsion from school

A student of Ihalagoda Sumangala Model School in Akmeemana is alleged to have been expelled from school without a valid reason. His father D.A. Indika Kumara has made complaints in this regard to the police and the Southern Province Education Department. He said his son had been expelled from school for failing to clear a mound of earth to fashion the school playground as ordered by the Principal. However the Principal said the child concerned had been attending school on the personal recommenda­tion of a teacher, without formal admission.

cation Office that the child was not admitted to a school before January 16 but admitted to the Sumangala Model School instead on February 21, 2012 as his parents claimed.

The director said he would take steps to admit the child to a school pending inquiries into the complaint. Meanwhile a team of investigat­ors from the Galle Regional Education Office, and the Akemana Divisional Education Office had visited the school and recorded the statement of the Principal.
