Nursing school teachers want overtime payments

A Health Ministry circular issued this month which stipulates that nursing school teachers would not be provided overtime allowances stands to cripple work at nursing schools around the country as nursing teachers may resort to a work-to-rule campaign, the Jvp-affiliated Government Nursing Officers Associatio­n (GNOA) said yesterday.

Therefore he warned that although the usual working hours for these nursing teachers was from 7am to 4pm, as a result of the new circular that was issued teachers may resort to leaving work at 2.30pm as they would not be paid for duties performed after that time, GNOA President Saman Ratnapriya said.

Health Ministry did not reintroduc­e overtime payments. “If they do not provide overtime payments for nursing teachers the quality of nursing schools will diminish, health sector services will gradually but surely fall apart and the people will be affected by this,” Ratnapriya warned. If the Ministry does not immediatel­y address this issue nursing unions would resort to strike action in the future, he warned .
