S. Thomas’ and Royal share Mustangs Trophy

The sporting gesture at the RoyalThomian limited over cricket

- BY ANTON B. FRANCIS

The heads of S. Thomas’ College and Royal College sportingly decided to share the Mustangs Trophy, at a press briefing held at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) Colombo on Thursday.

The trophy was originally awarded to the Thomians at the close of the limited over big match played for the Mustangs Trophy.

This year’s Mustangs Trophy cricket encounter was a historic one. Not only because, it was being played in a series between two schools that have extraordinary and friendly ties, but also because it left behind many lessons for the community at large.

After a brief interruption due to rain and bad light, the match resumed mid-way into the Royal innings amidst a lot of uncertainty due to the revised target set for Royal, based on the Duckworth - Lewis (DL) calculations. Although it was evidently errone- ous and doubtful, the Royal batsmen took to the crease and concluded the match, despite the mere impossible target of getting 128 runs in 6 overs. As it has now transpired there has been a grave mistake in the calculation. Had the accurate target been set, with six wickets in hand, it would have given Royal a fair chance of victory. Nevertheless, there was a mistake that gave rise to a situation where one side was declared winners and the other the loser. But if not for that mistake, the result may well have been a turn around.

The Warden of S. Thomas’ College, Indra De Soysa and Principal of Royal College Upali Gunasekera said that the joint organizing committee will take measures to prevent such things do not happen in the future

The Principal of Royal College thanked the Warden of S. Thomas’ and the entire Thomian fraternity for this sporting gesture.
