SWARNAVAHINI PROMISES FABULOUS LINE UPTHISYEAR

- By Ramesh Uvais

Popular television channel Swarnavahini which celebrated its 15th anniversary last week is now treading on its journey towards the 16th milestone.

Commenting on Swarnavahini's success story, its Director Programmes Buddhika Kulasekara said: “We are 15 years old and I am glad to say that we are the number one successful people's channel today. If you need to prove it, just check the key awards lists during past year. What's most important is that we have grown and shown progress gradually year after year. The 15th year has been better than the 14th and in the same context we can be rest assured that the 16th year is obviously going to be better than the 15th. It's a gradual build-up and most importantly we have not gone back but continue to make a forward march. We always prepare our strategies knowing very well the potential we possess.

2012 is going to be special for two major reasons. One is the change and new look that has been injected to the prime time belts. We already have two successful tele dramas for the 8.30 pm (Duwaru) and 7.30 pm (Adariye) belts. Duwaru is directed by veteran Nalan Mendis while Thrishula Deepa has done Adariye which is Nadeesha Hemamali's first mega tele drama,” he said.

“From today (April 2) we are launching two super tele dramas – Situmedura for the 9 pm belt and Sepalika for the 9.30 pm belt. Menaka and Nehara play lovers in Situmedura while Suraj and Chathurika play lovers in Sepalika which is something similar to the popular Olu story. The two are surely going to be hits. From May 5th we are going to launch a big teledrama called ‘Appachchi' directed by Ananda Abeynayake. It's a classic creation with Jackson Anthony in the lead. Ananda has produced five tele drama sfor us like Thaksalawa, Jeewithayata Ida Denna, Ramya Suramya, Rala Bidena Thena and others and all those creations won the best tele drama awards.

This year we are looking forward to start a new tele drama belt for the family audience on weekdays at 7 pm.

Our next colossal reality event is also coming up in the second half of this year. As you know we don't do cheap, low quality programmes. We come up with the best… so look forward to something very big. In addition the 9 am weekend belts will also see a big change soon. The Saturday 9 am programme called Saturday super star is similar to Most Desirable India with a celebrity and a big audience in competition. Sunday 9 am will have Coffee with Lucky – similar to India's Coffee with Karan. They are going to be two

glamorous programmes.

We will launch our morning and evening programmes as well and for Avurudu we have the biggest and most assorted programme line up starting from Narammala and ending up in Jaffna.

Besides two new Avurudu tele dramas, for the first time we will have the Avurudu beauty contest called the Swarna Kumariya pageant.

Last year we successfully did the dance stars dance finale, and we have done well financial wise too. Even the staff members have worked as a team which has given us the power and confidence to compete with any channel. We still live in the hearts of the people because we have the right ingredients to satisfy their tastes. Lastly, I am grateful to Chairperson Dr. Soma Edirisinghe, Deputy Chairman Jeewaka Edirisinghe, Managing Director Asanka Edirisinghe and directors Nalaka and Deepa Edirisinghe for their motivation and support at all times,” said Buddhika.
