JVP warns of impending price hikes
Stating that the country’s imports had virtually come to a standstill as a result of the exchange rate crisis, and due to absence of a proper economic management as a whole, the JVP yesterday warned that people should be prepared to face more economic shocks in the near future.
JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe, who was speaking during the ‘Maha Viru Samaruwa’, a programme organized by the party to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the insurgency launched by the party in 1971, said that imports would soon come to a standstill as the government does not have funds to import even

essential items. He said that a senior cabinet minister had recently confided in him stating that imports should be stopped as the country was now in a position to be selfsufficient.
Besides Mr. Amarasinghe explained that one should expect more price hikes in the near future because of the latest agreement that the government had signed with
the International Moni- tory Fund (IMF). He said one of the main demands of the IMF was to turn state institutions such as CPC, CEB and Sri Lankan Airlines into profit making ventures.
He said that what the IMF had really wanted the government to do was to achieve this goal by making the people carry the burden. “In this context you can expect more price hikes in the future,” he told the large crowds that participated in the commemoration.
The JVP leader also explained that capitalism had proven to be a failure the world over and that the economic turmoil had made the people take to the streets in over 951 cities.
Mr. Amarasinghe said that people in this country too should be ready to do the same. He said the JVP was currently holding discussions with various international organizations to get their support for the Sri Lankan segment of the global struggle to end capitalism.
