“The public outcry against the dumping grounds is the main problem faced by solid waste disposal programmes. Another issue was to prevent contamination of ground water resources from solid waste disposal. Therefore, choosing a safe dumping ground and safe disposal under a suitable plan was extremely important for safe solid waste disposal,” Dr. Herath said.
The programme is assisted by Peradeniya and Ruhuna Universities, Nationalsolidwastemanagement Unit, Institute of Fundamental Studies and Saitama University of Japan. The five year programme was sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA) and Japan Science Foundation, Dr. Herath said.
The programme will focus on new and safe methods for refilling of lands using solid waste, managing and using them for indus- trial purposes, identifying most suitable locations for solid waste disposal that would not harm the environment and disturb human habitation, with safe methods not to contaminate air and underground water resources etc, he added.
