ISLANDWIDE AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON FUEL SAVING

The Petroleum Industries Ministry was to conduct an islandwide awareness programme on fuel saving and it would be launched with an all island school essay competitio­n, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayan­tha said. Minister Premajayan­tha pointed out that the studies conducted by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporatio­n (CPC) had found that there was about 10% waste fuel during transporta­tion, storage and pumping of fuel and it was a huge loss to the CPC on financial terms.

“Even the motor vehicle drivers and filling station attendants need a lesson on the saving of fuel as our wastage at various stages is high in comparison to other countries,” Minister Premjayant­ha added.

A motor car rally titled ‘Economy Rally’ has also been organised to popularise low consumptio­n motor vehicles in addition to the awareness programmes targeting motor vehicle drivers, filling station operators and schools to be held on district basis.

Meanwhile, the CPC has decided to refurbish 9 schools in nine districts at a cost of Rs. 18 million to celebrate its golden jubilee. The refurbishm­ent includes the constructi­on of a library, computer room and a new hall for the schools selected for developmen­t.
