Varsity students claim IUSF disrupts university system

University students yesterday charged that ragging and severe harassment by the Inter-University Student Federation (IUSF) was the reason for the disruption of the university system and called on the government to remove IUSF members from universiti­es.The students staged a protest at the Fort Railway Station yesterday. The University Independen­t Conversion Movement, a newly formed university student’s movement said the JVP affiliated IUSF which comprises university unions from around the country was responsibl­e for the decline in the quality of education in universiti­es, student attendance and the issues in universiti­es.

6,000 students from underprivi­leged families had abandoned their education at universiti­es

deera alleged that due to severe harassment so far 15 students had died, 25 university students had become permanentl­y disabled, two students had committed suicide and two students at the Peradeniya University had been subject to sexual harassment.

He said that some 6,000 students from underprivi­leged families had abandoned their education at universiti­es due to severe harassment from IUSF members.
