PMC a national issue
Malabe Private Medical College is the great controversial issue that has sprung up among the learned people in this country. Now the education authorities are getting prepared to place the last nail to the free education coffin through this. With all the criticisms, the pros and cons are to be measured not only by the minister or other bureaucrats, but also by a wide dialogue among the erudite scholars, uni-students and in and outside the parliament as well. All the BOI projects established here are seeking tax holidays and other benefits to enhance their profits. Up to now we have never seen any kind of International School or Institute providing scholarships for the poor children here to learn in their five star class rooms. Likewise this PMC would never help the nation to bring these students up as doctors. A few well to do groups are struggling to get their children here with or without minimum qualifications by the power of money. However if the green light comes up all the medical students who are obtaining their MBBS or any type of medical degree will not remain here and may fly overseas in search of better prospects. If so this institute will become a company which exports doctors to the world market.
The only thing government should do is not to keep their ears closed to public criticism and make way for more and more positions in local medical faculties and open new avenues by means of aid from countries that have good diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka. The SLMC also can intervene with good faith to work out this matter.
