3-on-3 Cager at Navam Mawatha today

The first ever 3-on-3 Street Basketball Championsh­ips, organised by the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation, will be worked off today at the Navam Mawatha car park.

The tournament will feature 24 teams in each of the six categories – under 15 boys, under 15 girls, under 18 boys, under 18 girls, open men and open women – and will be played on temporary courts set up at the car park.

3-on-3 street basketball is a shorter version of the regular basketball played in a half court with 3 players inside, and four players in a team. It is gaining popularity around the world and FIBA internatio­nal recognised it as a separate discipline and will feature as an Olympic sport in Rio 2016.

Organisers will conduct two more tournament­s at the same venue over the following two weekends from 30th June -1st July and 7th -8th July 2012. The first eight winners of each category will automatica­lly be qualified for the next tournament the following weekend.

Limited entries are available on first come first served basis for the next two weekends. Registrati­on fees are Rs. 2,000 per team for Under 15 Girls & Boys and Under 18 Girls & Boys, and Rs. 4,000 per team for Open Men & Women.
