3-on-3 Cager at Navam Mawatha today
The first ever 3-on-3 Street Basketball Championships, organised by the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation, will be worked off today at the Navam Mawatha car park.
The tournament will feature 24 teams in each of the six categories – under 15 boys, under 15 girls, under 18 boys, under 18 girls, open men and open women – and will be played on temporary courts set up at the car park.
3-on-3 street basketball is a shorter version of the regular basketball played in a half court with 3 players inside, and four players in a team. It is gaining popularity around the world and FIBA international recognised it as a separate discipline and will feature as an Olympic sport in Rio 2016.
Organisers will conduct two more tournaments at the same venue over the following two weekends from 30th June -1st July and 7th -8th July 2012. The first eight winners of each category will automatically be qualified for the next tournament the following weekend.
Limited entries are available on first come first served basis for the next two weekends. Registration fees are Rs. 2,000 per team for Under 15 Girls & Boys and Under 18 Girls & Boys, and Rs. 4,000 per team for Open Men & Women.
