Late burst sees Kandy through

A late burst saw Kandy SC recording a comfortabl­e 25 points (1 goal, 3 tries and a penalty) to nil win over Police SC at Nittawela yesterday. For the winners flank forward Sean Wijesinghe scored a hat trick of tries. Tongan centre Lolohea Etuate scored the other try. Half back Roshan Weeraratne put over a penalty and Skipper Saliya Kumara converted one of the tries. There was no scoring at the short whistle of referee Aruna Rankothge.

Up Country Lions chalk up maiden win

Newcomers Upcountry Lions chalked up their first win – in their second game – of the season when they overcame CH & FC 42 (2 goals, 5 tries and a penalty) to10 (2 tries) in their Dialog Rugby League ‘A’ Division encounter played at Maitland Crescent..

Having lost to Kandy SC 26-11 in their league opener a fortnight ago and having been given a bye last week, the Nawalapiti­ya-based club was made to work hard in the opening quarter, managing a solitary try.

By halftime they managed to add another try and a penalty to that tally whilst conceding a try, to lead 13-05.

In the second-half however, they managed to assert their strength as they ran in a further five tries (converting two of them), whilst CH managed just another try for the final score to read 42-10.

CH came into this game having pushed Kandy SC, who recorded a hard-earned 18-10 win, last week. For the hosts Tuan Shamrock and Indika Udayakumar­a touched down.

Nilusha Fernando of CH & FC and Desmond Wilson of Up Country Lions were red carded.
