WOMAN STABBED TO DEATH

Police said the victim was allegedly stabbed to death following a heated argument

A woman was arrested over the killing of a 44-yearold woman in the Udawelpola area in Kurunegala on Saturday evening over an alleged relationsh­ip the suspect had with the victim’s husband.

Police said the victim was allegedly stabbed to death by the suspect following a heated argument. The victim’s husband is said to be the best friend of the suspect’s husband. The victim’s husband and the suspect had been having a secret affair for years according to the police.

After lunch the husband of the victim had gone to the Kurunegala town to drop their son to a tuition class.

4.00 pm on Saturday. The family of the victim had visited the house of the suspect for lunch on their invitation on that day.

A short while later an argument had erupted between the two women resulting in the suspect stabbing the victim with a knife.

Kurunegala police said the victim had been stabbed more than 20 times. The 36 year old suspect who is a mother of one is a resident of Udawelpola area in Kurunegala.

The victim was identified as Chamila Withanarac­hchi (38).

The magisteria­l inquiry was conducted by the acting Kurunegala Magistrate and the body was sent to the Kurunegala General Hospital. The suspect also received treatment at the hospital under police custody.
