Work according to your conscience : Deshapriya

- BY AYESHA ZUHAIR

Working according to one's conscience is the most important criterion for success, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said on Saturday (30).

Addressing the 16th Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Muslims Media Forum (SLMMF) in Colombo, Mr. Deshapriya stated that there were three important standards for work: first, it must be court proof; second, it must be audit proof; and third, it must be conscience proof.

Losing sight of the first two standards could result in the loss of one's job, while meeting the third standard would ensure that the job was well done.

The Commissioner also pointed out that the relationship between government officials and the media needs to be one of friendship and trust, and not one of enmity and doubt.

Mr. Deshapriya stated that

It is no doubt important to expose wrongdoings to eliminate corruption but the good too needs to be highlighted

he had been cautioned not to trust anyone, especially journalists because a mistake made by a journalist could prove to be more costly than a one made even by a doctor.

"People want to read bad news. They are not interested in the good that is done by the vast majority of officials but about their misdeeds. It is no doubt important to expose wrongdoings to eliminate corruption but the good too needs to be highlighted," he asserted.

Mrs. Fathima Muzaffar, General Secretary of the All India Muslim League delivered the keynote speech. SLMMF President N. M. Ameen also addressed the gathering.
