Gang arrested with fake notes

A gang who has allegedly robbed jewellery from several houses throughout Vavuniya and suspected of printing fake currency notes were arrested by the officers of the intelligen­ce unit and the unsolved crimes division of the Vavuniya police.

Following informatio­n received about the robberies from 12 houses and over 200 sovereigns valued at Rs. 10 million, police arrested two suspects from Navasikula­m and Sidambaram areas in Vavuniya with 135 sovereigns and a Rs. 1000 fake currency note in their possession.

The police have also revealed that the suspects had mortgaged more than 75 sovereigns robbed by them to the banks in Mannar and Killinochc­hi. All the suspects were due to be produced to court.

Jayaweera and under the supervisio­n of Va- vuniya SSP Hemantha Adikari an investigat­ion is being conducted by the OIC of Vavuniya police headquarte­r Chief Inspector Eric Perera and OIC of the unsolved crime division SI Shantha Vithanage. PCs Upali, Janaka, Jayaweera, Ranjith, Chandrasek­era and Herath also participat­ed in the raid.
