St Joseph’s and Mahamaya emerge champions
Defending champions in the boys and girls categories St Joseph’s Colombo and Mahamaya Kandy came out on top at the 39th Schools Swimming and Diving Championships concluded at the Ananda College swimming pool yesterday.
The two schools retained the title with St Joseph’s securing a mammoth 637 points with Mahamaya accumulating 429 points. Royal with 565 points and Ananda with 369 points took the second and third position in the boys category while Ladies College and Visakha with 401 and and 201 came out the second and third best in the girls category.
St Joseph’s and Mahamaya were way ahead at the end of the third day on Saturday and were hot favourites to retain the championship title.
Meanwhile record tumbled and the four day championships saw 40 new records being established with majority of it coming in the girls’ category. There were 30 new records set on the first three days with ten on the final day.
Mahamaya’s Devdindya Jayawardena and Kimiko Ra- heem of Asian International School had three each while two records each were set by Vinoli Siriwardena and Sunethra Wijeratne both of Ma- hamaya and Amanda Jayasekera of Meuseaus Colombo while in the boys category W.K.S. Wickramaarachchi of Royal Central Polonnaruwa was responsible for two records.
The 39th Schools Swimming Championships conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Association and sponsored by Nestlte Lanka Ltd saw 1710 participants from 135 schools taking part with 1063 in the boys and 647 in the girls.
