Police trounce Upcountry Lions 12 -10

Police Sports Club stunned the star studded Upcountry Lions Sports Club with a thrilling 12 points (4 penalties) to 10 (1 goal, 1 penalty) win in their Dialog League A Division inter Club rugby tournament match played at the newly developed Jayatillak­e Stadium in Nawalapiti­ya yesterday. At half time Police led 6-3.

Upcountry Lions which has Nawalapiti­ya as their base somewhat disappoint­ed their supporters as it turned out to a fiery baptism for them, losing their maiden appearance at the Jayatillak­e Stadium. Whether this is going to be a bad omen is left to be seen

match which made ground conditions wet and slipper and not conducive to fast open rugby thus forwards has to bear the brunt of the play. In the final reckoning it was the better spot kicking proved to be decisive. Just a solitary try was scored in this match which had the quota of two foreign players with experience in both teams but the defence held.

The game started with the Police non national players Australian fly half Sam Aolele knocking over two penalties and the Upcountry Lions kicking a penalty through full back Rajitha Sansoni.

Early in the second half Police fly half Sam Aolele kicked another penalty to increase the score to 9-3. The Upcountry Lions had their moment of glory briefly when their No. 8 and skipper Samoan born New Zealander playing as No. 8 Mathew Time scored off a forwards charge and Rajitha Sansoni added the extra points to lead 10-9.

But shortly afterwards Sam Alolele converted another 40 metre penalty to put the Policeman ahead and they maintained this lead till the end.
