Never in the history of the Hindi cinema has an actor who had acted as a villain been so popular and his dialogue mouthed

by millions in India like Amjad Khan in Sholay. His role in Sholay made him rise to the zenith in Hindi cinema. Though the film had super stars like Amitabh Bachchan , Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar but it was Amjad Khan’s role as Gabbar Singh that was most memorable.

Sholay is one of the all-time blockbuste­r movies in India and one of the highest earners and ran without a break for a couple of years yet it was Gabbar Singh who was well remembered for his role.His dialogue “Arre O’ Sambha, Kitne Aadmi The” was mouthed in all parts of India who had seen the film.

After his success of Sholay, Amjad Khan continued to play the role of villain in many subsequent films in the 1979s,80s and early 90s.He superseded the popularity and demand earlier actors like Ajit, K.N.Singh, Pran to name a few who too played the role of a villain.

It was after Sholay, that he was cast opposite Amitabh Bachchan in many films thereafter.He had played unconventi­onal and comedy roles as well. In 1988 he appeared in the Merchant –Ivory English Film, “The perfect Murder” as an underworld don.

He was a very charitable person. It is learnt that he used sit on the steps of his house on Fridays and give charity to those who come for it.

He was also the recipient of the prestigiou­s National awards on numerous occasions. Amjad Khan was adjudged the best villain on several occasions and won Filmfare Awards.

He was an acclaimed Indian actor and director and acted in over 130 films in his film career spanning over twenty years.
