DOCS IN NORTH TO STRIKE TOMORROW

Dr. Nimalan (GMOA Jaffna branch) receives death threat

More than 1000 doctors from nearly 100 hospitals in the Northern Province will go on strike tomorrow urging authorities to remove the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital - for the failure to arrest those who were involved in attacking the house of Dr. J. Kumar in June.

Another reason which paved the way for the doctors to take trade union action is the President of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) branch office in Jaffna, Dr. Nimalan had received a death threat over the phone.

GMOA Assistant Secretary and Media spokesman Dr. Navin de Soyza said that doctors attached to the Teaching Hospitals, District Hospitals, Base Hospitals and Rural Hospitals will strike on Tuesday.

The association has urged the health authorities to transfer the current director who had caused a number of administration problems at the Jaffna General Hospital.

“We have informed these to the Health Ministry but they had failed to come up with suitable solutions to the problems,” he said.

A disciplinary investigation was conducted against the lady director and it was found out that she had committed serious illicit dealings.

However she is still functioning as the director of the main hospital in the Jaffna peninsula and the GMOA fears that she would now be able to manipulate the evidence given against her.

“We are not urging authorities to send her home but we want them to transfer her. Then an impartial investigation could be carried out,” he said.

Doctors at the Jaffna General Hospital went on strike two weeks ago in protest against the problems faced by them due to the present administration and failure to arrest suspects involved in the attack on the house owned by Dr. J. Kumar in June.
