Damayanthi fonseka the Determined actress

- By Vasantha Wimalasinghe

Damayanthi Fonseka is no stranger to filmgoers and television audiences of this country. She has also made a name for herself as a stage actress too. She has never hesitated to play any kind of role and that trait in her has made her a much sought after character actress.

Your current acting assignments?

Upali Gamlath’s ‘Hima Gira’ is my most remarkable assignment this year. I had to even go to Nepal to shoot some crucial scenes. Thushari Abeysekara’s Padera Thatakaya (Sudu Nelum Vila) is another assignment of mine. The two characters are poles apart and I really cherish that kind of variety in my roles.

Do real life experiences help you recreate them on screen?

Not really. For instance I played the role of a businesswoman who had three daughters recently. Many people commended me for the role and asked how I did that without real life experience. True, I am not a mother in real life but I have about 22 nephews and nieces of my sisters and brothers in our family. I treat them as my own children.

Are you satisfied with your acting career?

I started acting as a 13 year old school girl. I did my ALs and went abroad for higher studies. Despite all that I continue to play diverse roles in films and tele dramas. I have no reason for regret.
