NHDA flats to receive facelifts

- BY SANDUN A. JAYASEKERA

All flats under the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) in Colombo and other parts of the country would be fully repaired in the next few months, as the NHDA provided a service to residents more valuable than the rent, Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

Addressing a ceremony held to mark the completion of repairs of the Maligawatta Housing Scheme after 39 years, Minister Weerawansa said the objective of the project was to improve the living standards of people living in those flats.

“There’s no doubt a major transformation has taken place in the Maligawatta flats after renovation as the living standards of over 7,000 residents have improved. I can see this from their jubilant behaviour. The NHDA has spent Rs. 280 million for this project and this is the first time the Maligawatta flats underwent a major improvement since its establishment nearly 40 years ago,” Minister Weerawansa said.

disappointment over the attitude of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) as it had failed to provide any service to the Maligawatta flats even though rates were collected on time. The CMC wanted the NHDA to repair the road network within the scheme, replace street lamps with new bulbs and clean and repair the sewage disposal system if they were to attend to the solid waste disposal problem at the scheme - a tall order indeed, he said. Minister Weerawansa requested the residents to maintain the scheme well and keep it litter-free and pleasant as it has been subjected to a full repair.
