JHU URGES GOVT.TO PRESS INDIA TO HALT TESO MEETING

- BY JAYASHIKA PADMASIRI

The Ven. Thera asked how India would feel if Sri Lanka hosted a summit for separatist Muslims fighting for an independent state in Jammu and Kashmir

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday urged the government to press India to cancel the Tamil Eelam Supporters’ Organization (TESO) conference scheduled to be held tomorrow in Chennai.

JHU MP Athuraliye Rathana Thera addressing the media yesterday said, “India must realize that this summit is being held to threaten the freedom and safety of another country. This is an effort by TESO to establish a separate state of Tamil Eelam, and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi is also supporting this because he needs to get votes by arousing racism amongst the people.”

The Ven. Thera asked how India would feel if Sri Lanka hosted a summit for separatist Muslims fighting for an independent state in Jammu and Kashmir.

“We urge the Indian Central Government to take action against these acts of racism and to prove that Tamil Nadu is still a part of India and not a separate state that leaders of the central government cannot control,” the Ven. Thera said.

JHU Central Committee member Hadigale Wimalasara Thera said the government must enforce the law on politicians like R. Sampanthan, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne and Suresh Premachandran who are expected to attend the TESO conference, as they are violating the constitution by going against the pledge to protect the unitary nature of the country.

JHU Media Spokesman, Nishantha Sri Warnasinha said, “It’s disappointing that the atten- tion of the Indian Central Government has not been drawn towards this issue. But what is even sadder is that the Sri Lankan government is following a silent position and not protesting against the TESO conference,” he said.

Mr. Warnasinha added that if politicians like Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R. Sampanthan attend the TESO conference the least they can do is tell the TN leaders to allow Sri Lankan fishermen to fish in their waters without being blocked by Indian fishermen.
