FRAUD OF 7MN AT ANURADHAPU­RA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL DETECTED

Three officers serving in the Anuradhapu­ra Municipal Council had been interdicte­d with immediate effect by the Anuradhapu­ra Municipal Commission­er Sampath Rohana Dharmadasa, for allegedly defrauding Rs. 7 million of council funds collected as municipal rates.

The subject clerk Sisira Palitha Bandara and officers A. P. Dissanayak­e and A. E. Sarathchan­dra of the municipali­ty had been interdicte­d accordingl­y.

It had been revealed that the rates collected from householde­rs over a considerab­le period of time had been allegedly defrauded without crediting it to the council account.

Noticing a shortfall in the incomes derived from taxation by the Municipal Council the Commission­er had discreetly made inquiries and acting on an anonymous petition sent by a rate payer, he had conducted a full scale investigat­ion, which led to this discovery, sources

Commission­er Dharmadasa confirmed that an amount exceeding Rs. 7 million had been defrauded by the suspects, and he had received further informatio­n regarding another ten employees of the council involved in this fraud.

He affirmed that the documents relating to this massive fraud had been taken over by him, and a special investigat­ion would be made and those found guilty would be severely dealt with.
