World Indigenous People’s Day at Dambana
The World Indigenous People’s Day was celebrated in a grand way on Thursday (09) at Dambana with Minister of Cultural Affairs T.B.Eknayake and Vedda Chief Uruwarigelage Vanniyala Ettho as the chief guests. The programme included a health camp to provide free medical consultation and treatment to the Vedda community. The late Vedda chief Tissahamy’s grave was given a face lift at a cost of Rs 700,000. A statue of the late Tissahamy at the Dambana Cultural Centre was unveiled and garlanded by the minister.
The day’s programme also included the laying of the foundation stone for the proposed housing scheme for 25 families of the Vedda community. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs will provide Rs.150, 000 to each

family to construct a house in the housing scheme under the supervision of the Housing Development Authority. However, the beneficiaries will be required to provide the labour in the construction of the houses.
About 500 people from Dambana, Ratugala, Henanigala, Wakarai, and Polbedda Vedda communities, Parliamentarian Thenuka Vidanagamage and several senior officials including Badddula Govt. Agent Rohana Kirthi Dissanayaka and divisional secretaries of the respective areas were present at the occasion.
