AOn August 17 and 18 in Peradeniya

Japanese Film Festival will be held at the Peradeniya University’s E.O.E. Pereira Theatre (Faculty of Engineerin­g), on August 17 and 18 to mark the 60th anniversar­y of diplomatic relations between Japan and Sri Lanka - jointly organized by the Embassy of Japan and the Faculty of Engineerin­g, University of Peradeniya.

The films to be screened at this film festival are

August 17 at 6.00 p.m. - “Wanko” - The Story of Me, My Family and My Dog. This is a miraculous story of friendship and the indelible bond between a dog, a boy and his family based on true events of a family torn apart by an unimaginab­le natural disaster.

August 18 at 10.00 a.m. - “Fukushima Hula Girls” - The location of this film is situated in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011 where hula dancers called “Hula Hawaiians”, had tried to overcome and re-build a devastated resort hotel called “Spa Resort Hawaiians” in “Iwaki City” as a first step of reconstruc­tion of Fukushima. The story tells us how they faced to everyday living with the energy issues and how they struggled until its re-opening.

August 18 at 2.30 p.m. - “Quartet” - This musical film celebrates the story of a family reunited by their love for classical music than for kinship. Filmed during the Great East Japan Earthquake, over 700 volunteers supported the completion of this film in hopes of a speedy recovery from the devastatio­ns of the disasters.
