ANDREI Tarkovsky
The film festival focusing on the cinematic creations of globally renowned Russian filmmaker Andrei and the coinciding film workshop held yesterday and also today at the SLLT is indeed a significant move that should be hailed largely because the opportunity it gives to the young film enthusiasts in our country.
Among the films that are due to be screened are almost all films made by him including the most critically acclaimed ‘The Sacrifice’ which was screened on Saturday. Nostalgia was screened on August 8, Ivan’s Childhood on August 9 and Stalker on August 10.
Andrei Rublev will be screened at 4 pm tomorrow, The Mirror on August 15 and Solaris on August 16.
World renowned filmmaker Ingmar Bergman who watched ‘The Sacrifice’ had remarked that in his (Bergman’s) films he had tried to get into a closed room and experience the surroundings, but Andrei had found the key of that room, entered it conducted himself as a experienced player.
Andrei had visited Sri Lanka in 1963 to attend a Soviet Film Festival held here. It is recorded that he made use of the opportunity to participate in the premiere of Dr.Lester James Peries’ ‘Gamperaliya’ in Colombo .Andrei had then made only his maiden movie ‘Ivan’s Childhood’.
Andrei who was born on April 4, 1932 in the Soviet Union, died in Paris on December 29, 1986.
