DANGER OF CITY ROADS CAVING IN,WARNS CMC

- BY YOHAN PERERA

Roads in the Colombo city could cave in at any time anywhere as proper standards were not followed during construction, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) warned yesterday.

A senior engineer attached to the Sewerage Disposal Unit of the CMC told the Daily Mirror that roads in the city could cave in as the roads were substandard and could not sustain heavy vehicles as they were not strong enough and the soil was not hard enough. “The soil should be prepared in the same way it is

prepared when putting up high rise buildings,” he said, stressing that piling should be done before the construction. He said no piling was done when constructing the roads in the Colombo city and the country as a whole and this was the reason for the caving in of the road at Havelock Town recently. He said this would have been the reason for the caving in of the road near the Roxy Cinema last year. The notion that the out-dated sewerage system in city was the main cause for this issue was therefore dismissed by the Municipal engineer. “There is nothing wrong with the drainage system as it is functioning without any disruption,” he said.

He said proper standards should be followed when constructing roads in the future. However the US$ 100 million project was also underway to reconstruct the sewerage system in the city and it was a World Bank funded project.
