UNP PROMISES TO SOLVE WATER CRISIS IN NCP IN ONE YEAR
The main Opposition UNP yesterday pledged that it would resolve the water crisis in the North Central Province within one year if it was elected to power at the Provincial Council election on September 8.
UNP Chairman and Kurunegala District MP Gamini Jayawickrama Perera told journalists yesterday that his party would focus attention on irrigation and farmers in the same way it did in the past.
Mr. Perera said it would not leave the central government to deal with the issue if the UNP formed the administration in the North Central Province. “We will set up a special unit within the provincial council if elected,” he said.
He recalled that a similar programme was carried out by the UNP Government of President Ranasinghe Premadasa some years ago.
The UNP Chairman said it was possible to provide water from tube wells and his party would come up with such a programme. He said it would be possible to get water from 100 feet under the surface through modern technology used to dig tube wells. He said such equipment could be obtained from India at an affordable price. should come forward with a package for the farmers where compensation worth Rs. 100,000 should be given to each farmer in cash, in addition to fertilizer and seed paddy free of charge.
The MP also said a prediction was made by Lord Buddha that there would be natural disasters at a time when cruel leaders ruled a country. He recalled that this prophesy was made by Lord Buddha when King Kosol told him about a dream he had where four beasts appeared in a country and laid waste to it.
