PIYAWI TOPS POPULAR

-

The ‘Piyawi’ tele drama which is now being unspooled on Swarnavahini at 9 pm every Sunday, has changed the course of the Sri Lankan tele drama industry by topping popular rating charts.

Piyawi which began to unfurl portraying the lifestyles of the Colombo upper middle class, now takes the audiences to a remote village in Kataragama in 1989. Piyawi has so far been able to skillfully transform the storyline from one social stratum to an entirely different social layer, thus grabbing the attention of the small screen viewers and also maintaining the top spot in ratings. Young Vishal began an affair with his colleague Tharusha who is also attached to the same Architectural Academy not with the intention of deceiving her at any cost. But his passionate sport ‘Boxing’ comes as the biggest hurdle to his relationship with Tharusha after he is one day brought down in the boxing ring as a result of a nasty blow by his opponent.

Since then he is forced into an entirely alien atmosphere with new people around him and a beautiful girl called Indi, bringing a new twist to his life.

What will fate have in store for Vishal who puts his real life in the backseat and runs behind the new figures that emerge in his thoughts? How will this development affect Tharusha’s life? The audiences will be plunged into a dilemma not knowing the answers to these crucial questions.

Piyawi director Chamara Janaraj Peiris made his presence felt in the tele scene by clinching a special award of excellence for his maiden creation ‘Ayal’ at the Sumathi Tele Awards Ceremony in 2010.

He went a step ahead by getting himself nominated for the best director, best script and best tele drama at the Raigam Awards Ceremony the very same year.

The latest indication is that Chamara Janaraj Peiris is planning on another fresh-themed tele drama which is also to be telecast on Swarnavahini after the highly successful ‘Piyawi’. By deviating from the present day conventional tele drama styles, such bold and creative teles will no doubt attract large scale audiences and become the topic of critics, opening new vistas in the country’s tele drama field.
