SECURITY IN KAHAWATTA FURTHER STRENGTHEN­ED

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakon­e has instructed the Police Headquarte­rs to assign 15 more police constables to the Kahawatta police with immediate effect.

He has taken the decision after his recent visit to the Kahawatta area where 14 women during the last twoand-a-half years were murdered mysterious­ly.

mysterious murders took place. However police have not been able to arrest the suspects involved in the double murder of a mother and her daughter who were killed and then burnt on July 19. The investigat­ors have now recorded statements from nearly 150 villagers. However the police have already come to a conclusion that the murders took place following a failed attempt to rape the daughter.

Most 0f the clues had been destroyed by the suspects, who had well planned the murder of the 63year-old Premawathi and her 32year-old daughter Pushpa Kumari who were killed and then burnt by the suspects.

The Special Task Force (STF) was conducting foot patrols every night in Kotakethan­a. At the moment 30 STF personnel and 40 policemen are stationed in the area including a temporary post in the house where the charred bodies of the victims were found.
