TUNA KING TO HELP SL FISHERIES SECTOR
Kiyomura Company President Kiyoshi Kimura, who is popularly known as the Tuna King of Japan has agreed to invest in the manufacture of fishing craft with the objective of improving the fisheries industry in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Kimura who met Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne recently said he was ready to play a role in improving local fish production by providing the necessary technology to the Sri Lankan fishermen.

Mr. Kimura said the environment for investment in Sri Lanka was large and that he was keen to help local fishermen to make use of the potential which was available in the country to develop the fisheries sector.
“We are happy about the tremendous opportunities Sri Lanka offers investors,” he said adding that he would also provide fishing vessels to local fishermen and train them in the use of modern technology.
The Japanese fisheries tycoon who had come to Sri Lanka on the invitation of Dr. Senaratne will introduce the Sashimi technology to Sri Lanka. Dr. Senaratne said Sri Lanka had become a safe destination for investment after the 30-year conflict ended.
He said Sri Lanka was yet to live up to its full potential in the fisheries industry though there was a continental shelf of 517,000 square kilometres.
Dr. Senaratne said the country’s annual fish production was 100,000 metric tonnes while Thailand with a continental shelf of 100,000 square kilometers less than that of Sri Lanka had a fish production of two million metric tonnes.
