JVP: Unacceptable Election results with law violation

- BY YOHAN PERERA

The results of provincial council elections would not be acceptable considering the extent of violation of election laws by the ruling UPFA, but nothing could be done about it as the breaking of such laws has become the order of the day, JVP said yesterday.

JVP General Secretary Tilwin Silva told a news conference yesterday that results of the elections would not be acceptable in reality because the ruling party was converting the elections into fraudulent ones in an unscrupulous manner. “The days when the ballot boxes are stuffed are long gone as there are sophisticated methods which a ruling party could use to make things favourable to them,” he said.

He said distributing bags of fruits, water filters, water pumps and carrying out campaigns on Election Day were some of these methods

results of the elections would not be acceptable in reality because the ruling party was converting the election into a fraudulent one in an unscrupulous manner

that could be used to attract votes. Mr. Silva said these things could be done easily today as the powers of the Elections Commissioner had been removed through the 18th Amendment to the Constitution introduced by the present regime. He said even the polls chief Mahinda Deshapriya had mentioned this fact and said the electoral laws did not have provisions for him to take action against those who were violating the laws. “Can we expect a free and fair election in such a situation,” he questioned. Also, the JVP General Secretary said it was a prominent UPFA politician who introduced the world ‘Jilmart’ in the 2004 general

elections.
