The Power of Positive Thinking

-

Tucked inside a quiet narrow street, far away from Dehiwala’s daily bustle, the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre stands quite incongruously alongside the other mainly residential buildings within its vicinity. From within its large white walls, a voice can be heard over a loudspeaker, calmly offering advice on meditation, positive thinking and physical healing through silence. The owner of these words is Sister Rama Nair, a visiting senior Brahma Kumari from New Delhi, who has dedicated virtually her entire life towards properly understanding, teaching and promoting meditation and its associated benefits.

Besides helping various people who regularly flow into the Raja Yoga Centre, Sister Nair was also involved in several other programmes during her 12-day stay in the country. Prominent among them was a thought-provoking discussion on ‘Healing through the power of silence’, which addressed the concept of overcoming sickness by adopting a calm and balanced mental state.

“At all levels there has been lot of research on meditation. It immediately creates those biochemical reactions in the body and you become balanced. Medical science shows that not 80 % but almost 100 % of ailments are

psychosomatic,” Sister Nair explains.“If you look at the word ‘disease’, it means you are not at ease at some level of your existence. You are in physical and emotional turmoil. You worry all the time, reacting with anger and irritation, and these create certain biochemical reactions which are not healthy. How meditation helps is, it aids healing, along with medication, and makes people calmer, more tolerant and gives them clarity of thought.”She says meditation is not a time-consuming activity but one which can be practised by anyone for about 15 to 20 minutes a day.

“What we are doing at the Raja Yoga Centre is actually equipping people with the right technique, the right understanding and the right spiritual skills. So if somebody comes to us with a problem, we may not give a direct solution because what we do is we empower that person. We give them the right understanding so that they can create a solution for themselves.”

According to the understanding reached through Raja Yoga meditation it has been found that a person’s worst enemies are within himself or herself.

What are they? Selfishness, anger, bitterness, jealousy, lack of ability to forgive and a desire for personal gain or glory among other vices. These are what destroy a person from within and also damage that person’s relationships with other people because we are deceitfully trying to use others for our personal benefit.

The Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre is located at No. 55, Peter’s Lane, Dehiwala. Telephone no. 2717572
