Thangaraja confident of retaining Golf title

The 125th Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championsh­ip conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union, which is deemed to be the second oldest golf championsh­ip in the world next to the British Championsh­ip, is scheduled to be worked off from today at the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

The six-day championsh­ip slotted to end on September 9 will see the participat­ion of golfers from six countries – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Afghanista­n and host Sri Lanka.

Defending Sri Lanka Amateur golf champion N. Thangaraja speaking to the Daily Mirror after the press briefing held at the Sri Lanka Golf Union yesterday said that he was confident of retaining the title.

He was optimistic saying, “Though I have been successful in some internatio­nal tournament­s in the recent past, I have still been practicing hard,” and said, “This is my home ground which gives me more confidence.”

“My biggest challenger will be the present All-India champion Anjad Cheema but I am very well prepared to meet any challenge.” Thangaraja is ranked 56th in the world and seventh in the Asian region against the lower ranking of Cheema.Thangaraja was also optimistic saying that along with his partner N. Ranga he is also looking forward to winning the team championsh­ip. The teams participat­ing will have two players each with Sri Lanka fielding three teams. The Ladies Championsh­ip will be a contest between Sri Lanka and India.
