Diamond swallowing Chinaman nabbed
Police yesterday arrested a Chinese who is alleged to have swallowed a fake diamond instead of the diamond worth Rs.1.8 million, which he was planning to swallow at yesterday’s International Gem and Jewellery Show now being held at the BMICH in Colombo.
They said the man was identified as Chau Chan (32). The diamond stall owner who had seen the Chinese swallowing the gem had immedi- ately informed the police.The suspect accompanied by another Chinese had come to the exhibition even before it was opened at 10.00 a.m. He had been wandering
It was first reported that all the gems and the jewellery in this stall were safe but it was later found that one of the diamonds had gone missing. The Chinese man’s colleague was also taken to the police post and a statement recorded
aroundthe stall all the while eying a ten-piece diamond exhibit. The owner-exhibitor said the Chinese man had planned to swallow a valuable diamond and replace it with the fake diamond he had brought.
His attempt had failed when several people had approached him and in his excitement had accidentally swallowed the fake diamond.
The man was acting suspiciously and this made the other exhibitors to take notice and take a closer look at his movements.

The Chinese man’s colleague was also taken to the police post and a statement recorded. The Cinnamon Gardens police are investigating. The man will be admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for an X-ray and will be later produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today.
