a similar faculty at Jaffna University is being expedited to increase the university intake for the next academic year in keeping with the Supreme Court ruling, officials said yesterday.
The SC endorsed a University Grants Commission (UGC) proposal to increase the student intake by 4,928 and thereby accommodate the candidates affected by the Z-score crisis. Normally, only some 22,000 students are admitted to universities annually. Higher Education Ministry Secretary Sunil Jayantha Navaratne told Daily Mirror the intake would be increased as ordered by the Court. “We are planning to open an engineering faculty at the South Eastern University to admit at least 200 students. The work on setting up the Jaffna engineering faculty will also be expedited. We have some difficulty in increasing the intake only for engineering. There are no major problems with regard to other degree programmes such as Arts and Management,” Dr. Navaratne said. The Committee of Vice Chancellors said the university system was hard pressed to accommodate such a large number of students at once and therefore this matter would be discussed with the UGC. Committee Chairman and Ruhunu University Vice Chancellor Susirith Mendis told Daily Mirror the university authorities had ‘serious difficulties’ in admitting more students to the Medical and Engineering Faculties.
