UPTO unhappy over unemployed graduate recruitment

- BY SARASI PARANAMANNA

The Union of Postal and Telecommunication Officers (UPTO) yesterday claimed that it was a violation of procedural codes if unemployed graduates were recruited to the Postal Department.

Treasurer of the UPTO Muditha Karunamuni speaking to Daily Mirror said though the government claimed that jobs would be given out to graduates it was not possible to do so in the Postal Department because according to the code of procedures the allocations were only enough for 70 recruitments.

He said the recruited 70 were already working in the accounting and administration units in the postal service.

“There are 949 unemployed graduates to be recruited to the postal service. The necessary steps to recruit them are already underway. But it is against procedures” he said.

The UPTO has written a letter to the Postmaster General expressing their displeasure over the attempt to recruit 949 graduates when there are allocations for only 70 recruitments.Karunamuni pointed out that since the Postal Department was an operative department only skilled and trained workers could carry out the duties at the department and expressed the objection of the UPTO for the recruitment of graduates.
